# Why I Don’t Approach Business Coaching Like a Traditional Coach

No certification, no workbook, no motivation talk. Here is what I do instead, and why the traditional model is built wrong for owners like us.

## Key takeaways

- Shawn has no coaching certification — his qualification is two decades of operating businesses.
- Sessions end with decisions, owners and a way to measure — not inspiration.
- The work runs on a fixed framework, not improvisation.
- Engagements are finite, typically six months, because the goal is for you not to need an advisor.
- The first job is diagnosis, not cheerleading.

Let me be straight about something: I am not a certified coach. I did not take a weekend course, I do not have a framework I licensed from a franchise, and I will never ask you to write your vision on a sticky note.

That is not a confession. It is the point.

## The problem with the traditional model

Most of the coaching industry is built by people who have never signed the front of a paycheck. Thirty years in corporate, a certificate, a logo, and suddenly they are qualified to tell a plumbing company owner how to survive a slow quarter.

They are not. Not because they are not smart — because they have never had to choose between making payroll and buying groceries. They have never bought a business at 2 AM because the numbers worked and the seller was desperate. They have never operated three companies at once while raising a family. When you have not lived it, all you can offer is theory with good graphic design.

I have bought, sold, and operated multiple small businesses. I have paid employees before I paid myself. I have had the sleepless nights and the Monday mornings where I did not know if the week would end in the black. When I tell you what to do, it is because I already made the mistake and took the hit.

## What I do instead

**Diagnose first, advise second.** You do not hire me for cheerleading. You hire me to look at the business the way a buyer would — the numbers, the labor, the pricing, the customer list, and how much of it depends on you — and tell you the truth about what is actually wrong. The thing you think is the problem is usually the third thing on the list.

**Decisions happen in the room.** No follow-up decks, no circling back. We sit down with the numbers and decide what gets fixed first, who owns it, and how we will know it worked. If you leave a session without knowing your next three moves, I wasted your money.

**A fixed framework, not improvisation.** Every client runs through the same sequence — the business itself, then profit, then the offer, then sales, then the website, Google, SEO, reviews, marketing, employees, systems, and scale. I do not wing it, and I do not dump a 47-page plan on your desk. It is an operating system for a small company, taught in the order that actually works.

**It is finite.** Engagements typically run about six months. A coaching model where you are still paying the coach three years later is a model where the coach failed. The goal is for the business to run without you — and for you to run it without me.

## The signal and the noise

The whole practice is built on one idea: in a small business, two or three levers move almost everything. Labor, pricing, follow-up, owner dependency, and a handful of customer-acquisition channels. That is the signal. Everything else — notifications, opinions, vanity metrics, new tactics, the shiny stuff that feels productive — is noise.

A traditional coach adds things to your plate. I take things off it.

## Who this is not for

If you want motivation, there are people who will sell you that. If you want someone to agree with you, your spouse already does. If you want a 90-day program with a graduation certificate, I am genuinely the wrong hire.

If you want a guy who has operated the kind of business you own, who will look at your numbers, tell you what they actually say, and stay until the fix is in — that is the practice.

## Where to start

The first step is always the same: a working session where we look at the real numbers together. Not a sales call. If I cannot find the leverage in your business in that session, I will tell you, and you will not owe me anything.
